Leigh Miners Rangers may have lost out on the league leaders shield but they are still going to give it their all in retaining their Grand Final crown. In Todd Fenlon they have a winger who knows how to score tries and that is worth its weight in gold.
Miners had to battle in this one from 12-0 down but in the end proved far too strong for their great rivals Siddal. Who is to say the play off series will not end with the sides clashing horns for the title yet again in late October.
Iain Davies gave the visitors a lead with a try before full back Freddie Walker came into the line to add another. Gareth Blackburn landed both conversions to see Miners on the back foot but they came back strong.
Two tries in five minutes from second row forward Darryl Kay saw Miners hit back as Johnny Youds landed both conversions. It looked like the game was going to end up all square at the break but Siddal hooker Sean McCormack nipped through to the line as Blackburn was again on target.
Fenlon crossed for his first try eight minutes from the break as Youds failed to convert but there was still time for Siddal to hold a half-time lead of 18-16. It was always going to be a tight contest before Miners managed to gain the initiative.
Miners took the lead for the first time eight minutes after the restart with a Tom Farrimond try as Youds again converted. Fenlon was on hand to score his second before a Connor Ratcliffe try on the hour and Youds goal made it 32-18.
Siddal kept going and were rewarded three minutes later with another McCormack try as Blackburn was again on target with the conversion. Fenlon though had the final word when he crossed to complete his treble with fifteen minutes to go.
