Leigh Miners make the long trip to West Cumbria on Saturday to take on Kells in the second round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup, Kick off 2-30pm at The Big Waite (Pit Field).

Miners travel North on the back of a 24-16 Charity Shield defeat against West Hull where discipline was a major issue with them giving far to many penalties away, something they will need to fix up quick along with their attack if they are to come away from The Pit with a victory and a place in the next round of the Challenge Cup against professional opposition. The lads know they can improve on last weeks showing and are looking forward to the challenge of playing a tough Kells side who have a formidable home record in recent years.

Coaches Allan Coleman and Paul Whitworth will have to make three changes from last weekends game with West Hull, Lee Gittins Lee Wingfield and Jonny Youds all missing out due to minor injuries and will not be risked with the start of the NCL season only one week away.

Kells go into Saturdays cup tie full of confidence having all ready seen off Premier Division opposition in Round One, beating Wigan St Judes 24-16. The Cumbrians are again expected to gain promotion this year having won Division Three last year and with the signing of hooker Carl Sice from the professional game in the off season to go with an already talented young squad that include BARLA captain Scott Lofthouse and NCL Division Three player of the year Tony Burns to name but a few, it shouldn’t be to long before Kells are playing big West Cumbrian derbies with Egremont Rangers and Wath Brow Hornets in the Premier Division.
