Having got off to a tremendous start Leigh Miners Rangers went down to a disappointing defeat at the hands of a youthful West Hull.
Allan Coleman’s side got off to a great start going into a 12-0 lead but they were pegged back and eventually lost the game. Frustration set in and poor discipline didn’t help their cause as they came up against enthusiastic opposition.
The early exchanges saw Miners on top and they scored two tries in a five minute spell to hold a 12-0 lead. Firstly Scott O’Brien weaved his way through the West defence for a try which Jonny Youds converted.
They doubled their lead five minutes later when O’Brien turned provider for Mick O’Boyle to crash over the line. Youds was again on target and at 12-0 it seemed like Miners were going to take the game with ease but it wasn’t to be.
It was a game which saw both sides frustrated by the referees whistle and lack of discipline plus poor options saw West Hull claw their way back. Mark Hewitt’s young charges settled down and went on to dominate the game.
West Hull didn’t break down the Miners defence until just before the break when a great passing movement ended with a Matt Plummer try. Then just as the half-time whistle was about to blow substitute Luke Gomersall split the defence to score leaving Kieron Jones to land the conversion.
Early in the second half on the back of a penalty a great short ball to Wests man of the match Elliott Windley saw the hooker dive under the posts. Jones landed the conversion and when substitute Ryan Esders powered through the Miners defence nine minutes later it was 20-12.
Miners did manage to stem the West Hull tide with a second O’Brien try when he danced his way through the home defence. Youds again converted but two Calvin Parker tries in the last seven minutes were enough to see the home side to victory.
