Leigh Miners make the long trip to the south coast on Friday afternoon in preparation for Saturday’s Carnegie Challenge Cup second round tie against The Royal Navy, Kick off 2pm at Burnaby Road, Portsmouth. After an opening day 23-16 defeat last weekend away at Hull Dockers, Miners will be looking for their first victory of the season and a place in the draw for third round against professional opposition for the third successive year, but know they will have to be smarter with the ball this week if they are to come away with the victory. It will be the third time Miners have come up against a team from The Armed Forces having previously played The Army in the first round of the Challenge Cup back in 2007 and the RAF in a charity match in 2010 at Twist Lane. The Royal Navy rugby league team are known as The Brothers and go into Saturday’s tie on the back of a 24-14 friendly victory against Plymouth University back in February.

The second team play their first competitive match of the year on Saturday when they take on Latchford Albion in a War Of The Roses match, Kick off 2-30pm at Twist Lane.

Leigh Miners Ladies start their summer season on Sunday when they play Wigan St Pats at the junior section, Kick Off 2pm at Manchester Road.

The u18s also start their National Youth League campaign on Sunday when they entertain last year’s champions Thatto Heath Crusaders, Kick Off 1-30pm at Twist Lane.
