LMR 18’s made the short distance over to Rylands sharks this sunday full of  enthusiasm looking for their first points of the season and feeling unlucky to have lost their opening fixture the previous week against Thatto Heath.

The game started well for LMR 18s as centre Ryan Ravenscroft came from deep in his own 20 metre area, fending off tacklers with his trademark hand off enabling good field position in Ryland’s half. A swift handling move then enabled a smart pass inside from James Bourke to Adam Tustin, who ran it in under the sticks past two defenders from 15 metres out on the 4th min converted by Ward.

Ryland’s responded by driving hard down the middle of the park playing ruck play after ruck play with their huge pack. This was matched superbly in defence by forwards Adam Prendergast , James Marsh, Alex Beckett, Adam Tustin and James Bourke who never took a backwards step. Hooker Thomas Eccleston had an exceptional game stealing yards at speed from the ruck throughout.

Ryland’s kicked well to turn the ball over in the miners half keeping captain Ryan Monaghan busy at the back and LMR backs Boardman, Hodson Ravenscroft and Helme got their side out of trouble driving the ball back at the ever pressing Rylands team.

On the 18th Minute a piece of individual brilliance and great footwork by LMR half back Josh Ward saw him waltz through the defensive line on his own 30 metre line, beat the full back and out pace his pursuers for 70 metres to score by the posts and then cooly converting his own try to put LMR up by 12 points to nil.

Rylands frustration was obvious as they gave away numerous penalties and made multiple errors. This seemed to breed a scrappy peroid to the end of the half as LMR failed to complete sets and put themselves under needless pressure allowing Rylands to score out wide on their left wing just as the half ended, converted well also, score line now 6-12 to the visitors.

The second half started and it continued where the first half ended. LMR gave away possession through errors and allowed Rylands pack to drive up field. LMR had a period of sustained pressure in the oppositions 20 metre area and after a penalty was awarded, Josh Ward placed a further two points on the board which meant the home side now had to score twice to win.

LMR replacements Williamson, Dean and Cartwright were busy throughout the game and after an injury to Helme, Myers found himself on the wing after a period at hooker in the 1st half.

Rylands never gave up and after an error from LMR left side on the half way line the home side forced the ball out wide to their left centre and the loose forward ran a great unders line to score under the sticks. After conversion the score was now 12-14 still in LMR favour.

After that a mad moment saw Eccleston make a brave darting run from the ruck again only to be held up on the line and with ten minutes to go, the game was tense and Rylands now desperate for the winner heaped on the pressure. Three minutes from time another ball handling error from LMR enabled Rylands the possession and ultimately to score out wide and win the game 18-14.
