Leigh Miners Ranger beat last years NCL Champions 26-12 in their first game.
Leigh Miners kicked off the new NCL short season with a hard fought 26-12 home victory against Champions Thatto Heath Crusaders at Twist Lane yesterday afternoon. On a warm afternoon both teams worked hard throughout and it took until the half hour mark for the deadline to be broken when Miners centre Tom Bradbury edged the home side in front with a penalty goal to give the score 2-0. Miners increased their lead a minute later after some good go forward by the forwards Ryan Smith cut through the Thatto defence to score in the left corner, Bradbury’s conversion going wide, 6-0 to Miners. The scores were level just before the break when Thatto scored under the posts to give the score 6-6 at half time after a tough opening forty minutes.
Both teams exchanged tries in the second half, Miners retook the lead when Darryl Flannery broke away to score followed by a try in the right corner by the visitors to tie the game up at 12-12 going into the final quarter. Tom Bradbury edged Miners into a 14-12 lead with a penalty goal, from the penalty Thatto had a player sin binned for dissent and Miners took full advantage, Martin Lewis finishing off some good play down the right to score, Bradbury converting to open up an eight point gap at 20-12. The game was wrapped up in the final few minutes when Ryan Smith went over for his second of the game, Bradbury landing his fifth goal of the match to give Miners a 26-12 victory.
