Leigh Miners ‘A’ Team hosted Eccles Roosters ‘A’ for their first home game of the interim season in the new National Conference North West Alliance League.

With a week off due to a bye Miners were able to field a side that had time to shake off their first game aches and pains to produce a disciplined performance against a disruptive Eccles side.

First on the score sheet was scrum half in-form Sean Pendlebury who intercepted a long pass to race 80 metres to the try line. Debutant Dave Stretton had to leave the field after his first drive with a badly broken nose. Next to score was stand off Scott Travis who impressed throughout the game as new half back pairing with Pendlebury.  A revitalised Danny Trimble began to break the line on the left hand edges providing Sam Shepherd with the first try in what would be a personal 30 point haul. Jonathan Carroll continued his fine form in the opposite centre when he crashed through the Eccles defenders to score. Eccles led by McAteer tried to breach the Miners defence but the defensive efforts of captain Dave Rowlands and Danny Galvin kept them at bay. As the Eccles pack began to tire, hooker Joe Harrison , began to take the team forward around the ruck. Lewis Sproston then grabbed his first try for the club from a set move that was arguably the try of the game. Sam Shepherd grabbed his second try from 50 metres before Eccles grabbed a try just before half time but missed the conversion under the sticks.

Half time 30 – 4.

During the interval the coaches’ instructions were to keep up the momentum, complete sets and keep up the score rate. After a great defensive set that restricted Eccles field position Miners returned the clearing kick and Joe Harrison supported a break by Scott Travis to score by the uprights. Sam Shepherd grabbed a brace of touch downs to take his tally to 4 tries. From now on it was one-way traffic against a tired Eccles side who managed one more score. Miners soon got back to scoring ways as Dave Rowlands and Todd Appleby got on the score sheet then Scott Travis, now operating at full back, capped a great display with the final try.

Next week Leigh Miners ‘A’ take on Rochdale Mayfield in what should be a much tougher encounter.

Final Score: 62 – 10 to Leigh Miners Rangers.
