Miners go into Saturday’s game having moved themselves within two points of top spot after they had a very good home win against Pilkington Recs last weekend. Again a much changed side putting in a strong hard working team performance to runout 34-24 winners, with the four u18s lads that played all impressing along with young half back Matty Pendlebury who had a solid debut.

This week Miners know they cannot take anything for granted in what will be a challenging game against a tough Lock Lane outfit. With Saturday being a massive day for the club as they celebrate their 50th anniversary, the players will be looking to put in a performance to match the occasion as they look to stay well placed at the top end of the table.

Coach Allan Coleman will be forced into making at least one change from last week’s team, with full back Ian Mort being ruled out with a knee injury. Coming back and available for selection this week are Will Ashworth, Mitchell Cox, Lee Gittins, Jordan Hellam, Elliot Liku, Jake Lloyd, Mike O’Boyle, Sam Peet and Jonny Youds.

Speaking about the win against Pilkington Recs, coach Allan Coleman said “Last week was a fantastic achievement, to beat a very good side like Pilks with at least seven players missing was unbelievable.”

“People keep saying we have no right be in second spot with the players we’ve had missing, but I disagree. If anything we deserve to be top.”

“With the way we have worked and dug deep. It was the team spirit that stood out for me.”

“There’s something building at moment with the young lads in the squad.”

On this week’s game against Lock Lane, Coleman added “This week doesn’t get any easier, we entertain Lock Lane who beat Siddal last week.”

“With new personal in their team they are going to be stronger, so we will have to be at the races from the off.”

“It’s a very important day at the club, With the 50th anniversary dinner in the evening along with the questions and answers session pre match with the past players.”

“As a group our job is to put a performance in that the club will be proud of.”

“We’re on count down now and we need to win every game, and that starts on Saturday”

Lock Lane travel over the Pennines having ended their six game losing run with a excellent 30-28 victory over leaders Siddal last weekend, the win moving them four points clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining. The Castleford outfit have recently been boosted by the return of scrum half Danny Rowse, the signings of a few players from local side Fryston Warriors and the capture of ex Super League player Francis Maloney who will also help out with coaching the side.

Leigh Miners second team are away on Saturday against top of the table (NWML Division 2) Pilkington Recs.

The u18s are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Thatto Heath Crusaders in a top of the table clash, a victory for Simon and Tim Hartley’s men could go along way to winning them the Premier 2 title.

Leigh Miners Ladies have a free weekend.
