Miners Rangers picked up a valuable two league points and the Steve Prescott Foundation Charity Shield after this tremendous match against second-placed Wath Brow. Arriving on the back of a midweek win which opened a gap over third placed Miners and with a six point aggregate cushion from the meeting in Cumbria a month earlier, Brow battled hard and rallied from 24-4 down with twenty minutes to go as the momentum of the game shifted but Miners held firm and sealed victory and the Charity Shield with a try ten minutes from time.

After the under-11s of both sides had served up a fine curtain raiser to entertain a large crowd the two senior teams opened proceedings and Miners made immediate inroads as Scott O’Brien’s kick to the left wing was gathered by Will Ashworth and although he was ankle-tapped he had the presence of mind to pop the pass up for Jonny Youds to finish off. However Brow responded immediately as they ran the ball on the last tackle and Cole Walker-Taylor linked in to the line to put Luke Davison finishing off well at the corner flag. It didn’t take long for Miners to regain the lead though and the game’s outstanding individual performer Connor Ratcliffe broke through from 30m out, fending off the tackles and stepping inside the fullback to score a fine solo effort, Youds adding the conversion. On the half hour the lead became that bit more comfortable as O’Brien kicked over the defence and the ball bounced kindly for him to nip in, gather on the bounce and sprint in for the try, Youds with the extras and 16-4 at the turnaround.

Miners continued where they had left off after the restart and a Youds penalty kept the scoreboard ticking over before Mitch Cox stretched out of the tackles to touch the ball down besides the posts for another six pointer. At 24-4 Miners were seemingly cruising but Brow are never out of contention and with Rich Huby a tireless presence in the pack they responded strongly. Twice they had scoring chances on either wing denied for forward passes before a deft Dean Rooney kick had Peter Caddy sliding in to score, Jason Connery with an excellent conversion. Within minutes the trick worked again as the increasingly-influential Rooney dabbed another kick through which ricocheted kindly for Conor Molyneux to gather and touch down, Connery repeating the conversion from the touchline. Miners had seen that twenty point lead whittled down to eight within a matter of minutes but they held firm and finally ensured the win with ten minutes remaining as Tom Farrimond put out a peach of a pass for Lee Gittins to force his way over, Youds with the fine conversion to round off proceedings.
