Leigh Miners make the trip to Castleford on Saturday to take on Lock Lane in a rearranged NCL Kingstone Press Cider Premier Division Round 5 fixture, Kick off 2-30pm at Lock Lane Sports Club.

The original fixture which was due to take place in April being postponed due to Lock Lane’s involvement in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, where they reached the fifth round before being knocked out by a strong Halifax side.

Miners travel up the M62 on the back of a 30-16 victory last weekend against Wath Brow Hornets, the hard fought win moved Miners within one point of second place Hornets and also saw them claim the first bit of silverware of the season in the shape of the Steve Prescott Foundation Charity Shield. The trophy going alongside last years treble to see the club proudly hold all four pieces of silverware on offer for clubs in the NCL.

This week’s trip to Lock Lane is a must win game for Miners with all the lads knowing that only a victory will do if they want to stay in the mix for finishing top of the tree come the end of September. If Miners are to get the win they need it will be the first at Lock Lane in the summer rugby era.

Coach Allan Coleman makes three changes from the side that beat Wath Brow last weekend, with Todd Fenlon, Jake Lloyd and Sam Peet replacing Matt Astley and Tom Farrimond who are both away for the weekend, along with Andrew Groves who is at a wedding.

Speaking about last week’s home win against Wath Brow, coach Allan Coleman said “I thought our first half was one of our best performances of the year.”

“We controlled the ruck and was very patient with ball in hand.”

“In the second half we tried to play to much in yardage and we ended up defending far to much.”

“But it was fantastic to achieve the fourth trophy, the players should be very proud.”

“Personally I don’t think that will be done again for a very long time. If ever done again.”

On this week’s game at Lock Lane, Coleman added “We go to lock lane in a confident mood.”

“We are the youngest squad the miners have ever had.”

“Lock Lane are a very tough team who like to bash your middles and play at you.”

“So all over the park we need to be switched on.”

“We have set our target for the run in and we need to be at our best week to achieve it.”

Lock Lane after starting the season well in the challenge cup and league having been struggling of late, losing their last four matches to find themselves sitting in ninth position. The Lane have recently lost their international coach Martin Rowse but with a few players expected to return this weekend they will be hoping to end their poor run of results with a win, which would move them four points clear of the relegation zone.

Leigh Miners second team are at home on Saturday in a top of the table league clash against Bury Broncos, Kick off 2-30pm at Twist Lane.
