Summer finally arrived at Twist Lane and Miners turned in a performance to match as they defeated Oulton. The warm conditions undoubtedly suited the smaller and mobile Miners team and the scoreline ultimately reflected the intensity and hunger the Leigh side showed from first to last as they outclassed the lowly Raiders to move into the play-off mix. Miners were without the two under-18s representatives from the previous weekend’s win at Rose Bridge whilst Liam Coleman was also missing but they welcomed Shaun Marsh, Martin Lewis and Craig Connor back, with Adam Thomason switching from back-row to stand-off. Oulton were without their key playmaker Danny Stanley as he served the final match of his suspension.

It was an even opening quarter and Aaron Gorton relieved some early pressure on the Miners’ line as he came up with a timely intercept, but Miners gradually turned the screw and were denied scores of their own when first Jonny Youds and then Johnny Lloyd both lost the ball with the tryline open. However on the quarter hour the home side went ahead, Scott O’Brien with neat footwork to slice through between the two big Oulton props and then finding Gorton in support to finish off, Youds goaling. The Miners’ fullback then had a try of his own disallowed for double movement before Oulton hit back as Tommy Griffiths drilled a kick down the left channel and the ball took a couple of ricochets to fall perfectly for Adrian Holdsworth to touch down and narrow the deficit. Two tries in the final ten minutes before half-time had Miners in control though, the first having a similar element of fortune to the Oulton try as Ross Bradley attacked the line only for the ball to come loose, referee Mark Hebblethwaite waving play on as Thomason followed up to touch down. Thomason was involved in the third Miners’ try as well, his kick spilled by the replacement fullback Liam Wiggins and from the attacking position Miners worked the ball right for Bradley to go in on the overlap and finish cheekily, the centre reclining on his back and touching the ball down over his head to give his side a 14-4 interval lead.

Even at that stage the advantage appeared decisive and Miners showed they were in no mood to let up as they scored at regular intervals throughout the second half. Some expansive play saw Thomason put the lively John Woods surging through the tackles to score at the corner, then O’Brien cut through an increasingly-wearied Oulton defence for a trademark solo effort, Youds goaling to move the home side 20 points clear. The pressure was relentless as Miners set up camp in the Oulton half, Tom Farrimond charging over for another six-pointer before Miners scored the try of the match from the restart, the ball shipped rapidly left and Thomason popping up on the wing with a tremendous surge of pace before turning the ball inside for Danny Jackson to finish off for a deserved try under the posts. Oulton showed some resistance and from a quickly-taken tap penalty they had their second try, Danny Hardy scoring from close range, but with the final play of the game Miners brought up the forty points, an Oulton attack breaking down near the home line and O’Brien and Sean Pendlebury taking turns to hoof the loose ball downfield before shipping the play left for Woods to finish off for his second, Youds’ conversion completing a very satisfactory afternoon’s work for Miners.
