Leigh Miners Rangers climbed off the bottom of Pool A with another fine performance to see off a spirited Egremont side. With the pivotal three of Ryan Smith, Scott O’Brien and Martin Keaveney to the fore the Leigh side showed their quality in attack and their tenacity in defence to dominate the second half after a nip-and-tuck first half. Egremont, bolstered by Samoan international Andreas Bauer and with JP Brocklebank always a threat at stand-off, contributed plenty to what was an entertaining match in bright autumnal conditions.

It was the visitors who drew first blood when Brocklebank took the line on and slipped a pass back inside for Matt Bewsher to charge in for 6-0 but the Leigh side hit back with two tries to take the lead as some good play close to the line saw O’Brien and Leon Brennan send Haydn Bud Skinkis in at the corner, then Brennan showed his power to wrestle over the line despite the defence’s best efforts. Egremont weren’t in the mood to surrender though and they re-established a lead as Kieran Glen scored off good play by Brocklebank, and the conversion and a penalty had the visitors 14-10 ahead. Miners again responded, Skinkis showing his pace as he collected a charge-down near his own line and then sped away to score and O’Brien’s solo effort had the home team looking good at 22-14 at the break.

When the Leigh side further extended that lead early in the second half, Gary Gittens driving to the line and offloading for the supporting O’Brien to score, the game was effectively secured although Egremont continued to ask plenty questions of the Miners’ defence. The Leigh side held firm though and were clinical going forward, Adam Thomason scoring off good work by Darryl Kay, and Smith then rubber-stamped the victory with two quality tries, the first showing his elusiveness from close range and the second as he burned through a gap midway inside his own half, shrugging off the fullback’s tackle and racing away for the final score.
