Leigh Miners Rangers A took on their second Wiganside in 5 days in the National Conference Alliance League 6th Round game.

With the 1st team at home as well the teams travelled the short distance to our Junior Section atManchester Road to play Wigan St Jude’s. The weather was fine and sunny with the pitch in great condition considering the wet weather during the previous week.

After playing mid-week the Miners side looked a little jaded in the early exchanges before Martin Lewis dived in low out wide on the right for the first score of the day on 10 mins. Sam Shepherd missed the conversion but it wasn’t long before he got himself on the score sheet when he strolled in when Miners had a two man overlap, again on the right side, and he converted the try 10-0 after 14 mins.

St Jude’s were finding it hard to get any possession as the Miners enthusiastic defence led by Dave Rowlands pressured them into mistakes in their own half. Miners ran the ball on the last tackle down the left flank and saw stand off Scott Travis break the line before feeding full back Sean Pendlebury who just squeezed in the corner, again Sam Shepherd converting from the touchline 16-0. Miners were getting into the Jude’s half too easily and it wasn’t long before a set move from the scrum saw Chris Barlow finish off under the sticks. With Sam Shepherd getting injured in that play Scott Travis took over the kicking duties and slotted his first attempt over.

Leigh Miners defence was standing firm and the closest Jude’s got to the Miners line was when they kicked down field only for the impressive full back Sean Pendlebury to return the ball at pace for his forwards to take over. Darryl Appleby, Danny Galvin and Kevin Howells kept targeting behind the ruck area making good inroads for the team. The introduction of Luke Warburton at hooker kept up the relentless attack and from this Darryl Appleby broke through the Jude’s defence and fed the supporting Scott Travis for his first try who was successful in the conversion. That was the last score before half time 28-0 to Leigh Miners Rangers.

The second half started with Danny Trimble and Martin Lewis combining with left winger Dave Gator who out paced the Jude’s defence before finishing off under the sticks for a converted try. Three minutes later Darryl Appleby got reward for his hard work with a well taken try. Again the Jude’s side were being forced into errors by a dominant Miners defence now refreshed with the introduction of Greg Walker and Danny Trimble. A break by hard working scrum half Aarron Reeve saw Scott Travis support down the middle before rounding the full back.

Wigan St Jude’s had their chances as they got repeat sets but just couldn’t find a way through. As time ticked down Martin Lewis grabbed his second try before the try of the game. Prop Kevin Howells crashed through the Jude’s defence 35 metres out, running over the desperate tackle attempt of the Jude’s full back for a well deserved try. Travis converting for a personal haul of 20 points.

This was a clinical and ruthless performance by the Miners side whose defensive effort over the past two games has been outstanding. They will be looking to take this effort into their next game away at Eccles on Saturday.
