Leigh Miners make the first of three long journeys this season to West Cumbria on Saturday when they take on Egremont Rangers in a rearranged Round 15 NCL Kingstone Press Cider Premier Division fixture, Kick off 2-30pm at Gilfoot Park.

The game being brought forward from July so both teams don’t go without a game this week after their round two fixtures where postponed due to Lock Lane and Siddal’s involvement in the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

Miners travel up the M6 having started their season with a tough 24-20 home victory against Rochdale Mayfield last weekend. Being under the pump early on from a fired up Mayfield outfit, Miners where made to work very hard in defence and apart from a early try from a kick for the visitors the home defence showed plenty of desire to defend their line and scrambled really well to keep Mayfield to just the one try in the first half with the chances they had.

In attack when Miners had the ball they was patient and clinical, scoring three first half tries from last years NCL Premier Division top try scorer Brad Hargreaves and a double from full back Andrew Groves. Miners where solid in defence during the opening twenty minutes of the second half and looked to be well on their way to victory when second rower Connor Ratcliffe scored a fourth home try. That soon changed though around the hour when winger Harry Gagen was sin binned, Mayfield come on strong in the final twenty minutes to score three tries and make the score 24-20 but couldn’t find the winning score as Miners dug deep in the closing stages to hang onto the win in a game that debutant Sam Peet impressed and took the Man of the Match award.

This week at Egremont the lads will be looking to build on last week’s performance against Mayfield with another hard working defensive effort, being clinical in attack again and have more of a share of the ball than they did in round 1 as they bid to win at Gilfoot Park for the first time in the summer era and in Cumbria for the first time since 2010.

Speaking about last week’s opening day win, utility forward Martin Gray said “It was good to start the season off with a win at home”

“In usual Miners fashion we conceded the first try but we had a strong spell in the middle part of the game, with a few quick tries, which gave us the confidence to go on and win.”

“I was impressed with the lads attitudes and the determination in defence towards the end.”

“There have been a few new faces down at training recently and the squad is growing in strength which will inevitably result in healthy competition for shirts each week.”

Looking ahead to this week’s trip to Egremont, Gray added “I hope we can push on with another strong performance away to Egremont this week.”

“It is always tough playing up in Cumbria, The key will be getting off to a strong start in the middle.”

“We have quality throughout the team to score the tries but a solid platform to play off early on will be crucial.”

Coach Allan Coleman this week welcomed back young prop forward Frankie Halton back to the club after a spell with North Wales Crusaders, to give him another big selection headache with a virtually fully fit squad available for selection again this week, leaving only Darryl Kay (hernia) and Adam Thomason (knee) unavailable through injury.

Egremont started their season last weekend with a 24-12 derby defeat away at arch rivals Wath Brow Hornets, in 2015 The Mont won the BARLA National Cup but struggled in the league only avoiding relegation on the final day with a win at East Leeds.

Egremont are still on to retain their trophy with them now being at the quarter final stage where they will take on Thornhill Trojans at home next weekend. In the league they will be hoping for no more fighting against relegation this year, but know if they are to push towards the top six they will have to improve their form away from Gilfoot Park.

Leigh Miners second team are at home on Saturday against Rochdale Mayfield in the league, both teams met a couple of weeks ago in the first round of NWML Trophy with Miners edging a close game 26-24, Kick off 2-30pm at Twist Lane.

The u18s are also at home on Sunday and will be looking to make it three wins from three in the league when they welcome Thatto Heath Crusaders to Twist Lane, kick off 11-45am.
