Miners Rangers Masters team boast an unbeaten record in 2014 having taken part in two festivals thus far this season. The first of these came at the Crosfields Festival in Warrington. Mark Meadows’ troops opened proceedings against a Blackpool side who always do well in this format of the game, but Miners turned the tables with a two tries to nil victory. Mark Sarsfield proved the game changer with Peter Marsh, Dave Gorton and Shane Hindley outstanding. The team then played far-flung visitors in the shape of Medway, from Kent, and again emerged victorious two tries to nil, Graham Hindley on the scoresheet and Simon Unsworth catching the eye of the attending Lancashire selectors as he finished tournament top scorer.
The team travelled to Orrell for their second festival missing the injured captain Neil McCulloch but handing debuts to Mark Edwards and Neil Bassett, whilst Mark Meadows made his eagerly-anticipated comeback from injury. In their game against the hosts Orrell, Darren Pilkington scored the decisive try. That saw Miners face a combined team of Crosfields, Hindley and Orrell and again record a 2-0 win. Mark Sarsfield and Darren Mort were outstanding with fullback Darren Pilkington in fine form with his motto of ‘thou shalt not pass’.
