On a fine and warm day Leigh Miners ‘A’ Team travelled to Oldham St Anne’s in the National Conference North West Alliance League. And with conditions suited to the Miners style of play it only took 3 minutes for them to score their first points when centre Sam Shepherd ran onto a fine flat ball from in-form stand off Scott Travis to score to the left of the uprights. Shepherd then converting his own try. But within 2 minutes Miners couldn’t hold out a repeat set from the Oldham side. The conversion missed 4-6. Good approach work by Garry Dunn and Craig Wilson saw Darryl Flannery go round the outside of 3 defenders before touching down under the post. The early withdrawal of prop Zak Patterson with a bad lip wound allowed this season’s debut of Shaun Marsh.

It then took ten minutes until the next Miners try as again Sam Shepherd ran a line that wrong footed the Oldham defenders to score his second try. With almost 30 minutes gone, strong defence by the Miners pack led by Darryl Appleby and Dave Rowland started to frustrate the tiring Oldham attack. Craig Wilson returned an Oldham kick on his own line and stepped his way through eventually finding the supporting Sean Pendlebury who was chased the remaining 60 metres before touching down. On 32 minutes substitute hooker Luke Warburton found a hole in the Oldham line defence off a set move and darted in under the posts. As half time approached and Miners  with a completion rate of around 80% Scott Travis got a reward for his work in and around the pivot role with a fine try bringing the half to a close with Miners leading 34-4.

Leigh Miners made a couple of substitutions at half time , one being Aaron Reeve who made immediate impact in defence and attack and on 44 mins Reeve backed up a play to get Miners back on the score sheet 4-42. The spelling of hookers Joe Harrison and Luke Warburton gave the Oldham side no mercy as they directed the Miners team up the middle before a set move saw Dave Rowland go over under the sticks. Next over the Oldham line was Aaron Reeves as he pounced on a loose ball from a strong kick and chase which saw a pressured Oldham player to try and off-load behind his own line. The flood gates opening the referee awarded 7 straight penalties in Oldham favour before they eventually crashed over the tired Miners line that had defended set after set. Once again the referee marched Miners back to their own line before Oldham got over the line again to score before blowing the final whistle what our timekeeper noted as 6 minutes early.

It was a credible disciplined performance. Miners built pressure throughout the game and were able to carry out their set plays that will stand them in good stead in tougher games.  MVP was Craig Wilson who linked well from full back and was unselfish in attack. Darryl Appleby worked hard with 16 carries and topped the tackle count with some brutal defence which allowed Sam Shepherd to take his 4 game points haul to 76.
