Its “Battle of the Borough” time again on Saturday when Leigh Miners take on local rivals Wigan St Pats in the quarter final of the Conference Challenge Trophy, Kick off 2-30pm at Twist Lane.

Miners go into Saturdays big cup clash in good form having won their last six games, the most recent being an excellent 28-10 away win against last years grand final winners West Hull last weekend, producing by far their best team performance of the season to leave a very good Wests side shell shocked. As well as another tough hard working defensive performance Miners will be again looking to respect the ball more and have a very high completion rate like last week as they look to keep building on their performances with some big games coming over the next few weeks. The lads know they are again going to have to be at their best to beat a good St Pats side or all the hard work they have put in over the last couple of months to get themselves into a good position in both league and cup will count for nothing, they are determined to keep up their good run of form and keep the dream alive of defending the Conference Challenge Trophy for a second time.

Coach Paul Whitworth will be forced into making three changes from the West Hull game with Mike O’Boyle being cup tied after already playing for Eccles in this years competition, along with captain Scott O’Brien and Dave Rowlands who are both away on holiday. Coming into the side are Craig Ashall who has recently joined the club after having a couple of months out of the game since leaving North Wales Crusaders, Tony Doyle and Ellis Grimes.

Wigan St Pats travel to Leigh on the back of back to back league defeats against Miners and Thatto Heath Crusaders to leave them in 9th position, nine points behind sixth place Miners. The Wigan outfit will have a good few players back available that missed the 24-14 home defeat against Miners three weeks ago and will be very confident of coming to Twist Lane to pick up a victory that would see them progress into the last four of this competition for a third successive year.

Leigh Miners 2nd team have been given the points after Widnes West Bank where unable to raise a team, the two points will keep the 2nds at the top of the table with seven league games remaining and keep them on track of a league and cup double after winning the NWML Trophy against Rochdale Mayfield last weekend.

The u18s are away on Sunday against Pilkington Recs in the league.

Leigh Miners Ladies have a free weekend.
