Leigh Miners ‘A’ Team hosted Rochdale Mayfield ‘A’ in the new National Conference North West Alliance League.

Injuries and 1st Team duty meant Leigh Miners fielded a depleted side but Miners made it 3 out of 3 in a hard fought contest. Miners kicked the game off and in their very first defensive set forced an error from the Rochdale pack. From the resulting scrum Stand off Scott Travis linked with full back Wilson who in turn fed wing man Dave Gator to dive in the corner. Rochdale then settled into their game and their forwards were allowed to make too much ground around the ruck area. From this they built a 6 – 12 lead and Miners knew they had a tough game on their hands. With time running out in the first half Miners managed to pull a try back when Dave Gator ran in his second try which was almost a copy of his first. With only seconds left of the first half Dave Rowlands was sin-binned for a second high tackle and Mayfield converted the penalty. The Rochdale side had benefited from some well placed kicks from their half backs which had caused problems for the Miners side during the half.

Half time score 10-14

Leigh Miners started the second half just as they did the first with a try in the first couple of minutes when Darryl Appleby managed to get the ball down over the line with four defenders trying to halt his progress. For the next ten minutes both teams exchanged sets and both going close before Sean Pendlebury eventually broke through and scored to the left of the uprights. 20-14 to Leigh Miners. The Miners forwards began to assert some dominance in mid field through Charles, Warburton and Grundy and the backs were able to get some good field position, Dunn, Travis and Pendlebury always looking a threat although last play kick options often let them down. Next on the score sheet was full back Craig Wilson who showed great footwork close to the line to stretch the lead to 28-14 with 19 minutes remaining. Sam Shepherd converted the try to take his personal points haul to 50pts in 3 games. The game at this point looked to be in Miners control but a determined Mayfield side didn’t give up and remained a threat through the impressive, strong running right centre, that was only denied a second try after breaking the Miners line and being chased and hauled down by Sean Pendlebury inches from the line. This tackle, on reflection, was a match saving effort as Mayfield hit back with two tries in the last ten minutes as the Miners switched off.

Final Score 28-26 to Leigh Miners.

Next week Leigh Miners ‘A’ are away against Oldham St. Anne’s.
