Leigh Miners Rangers picked up their first points of 2014 as they defeated old rivals Siddal in the traditional Twist Lane thriller between these two sides. Over the last decade this match has either served up a thrashing or a nailbiter and this was most definitely the latter. Siddal led for much of the game and when they opened a 17-10 lead going into the final quarter they appeared set to depart WN7 with the points for the first time in many years, but Miners snatched victory late on with two tries in the final twelve minutes.
Siddal were well-served by the immense Jaymes Chapman, a towering presence in a fearsome pack, with Shaun Garrod orchestrating play on the back of the forward effort, whilst Miners had Danny Jackson running in hard alongside Darryl Kay with Shaun Dowie redoubtable at fullback and Scott O’Brien inevitably at the heart of much of their play.
It was Siddal who took the early lead, Chris Brook putting Garrod breaking through the gap on half way and he found Nick Smith in support to finish under the posts, Gareth Blackburn converting. Miners responded immediately as they won possession back from the restart and O’Brien and Kieron Eccleston combined to put Jack Probert powering in at the corner, Jonny Youds converting. Back came Siddal, Garrod and Blackburn almost through but from the play-the-ball on the line the ball was passed inside and stocky prop Danny Keane tumbled over the line, Blackburn dragging his conversion across the face of goal. That allowed Miners to go in to half time on level terms, Eccleston spotting a gap ten metres out and slicing in to score.
Siddal had the chance to go in ahead when Emmerson Newburn saw his try disallowed for forward pass, but the Chevinedgers did go back in front just after the break when Smith broke on half way and the outstanding Chapman supported to finish beside the posts. When Garrod landed his field goal on the hour Siddal had a two score lead and for all Miners’ possession they had struggled to unlock a robust defence. They immediately hit back though, Adam Thomason driving to the line and as Siddal tried to run him dead in-goal the Miners man managed to touch down, Youds goaling. With twelve minutes to go the home side took the lead for the first time, Eccleston kicking in-goal and as Blackburn slipped O’Brien swooped to score. Siddal still had a chance, Garrod breaking through and Dowie coming up with the vital tackle. The game was sealed in the closing minutes as Miners won a repeat set after Newburn spilled O’Brien’s kick and Probert finished off for his second.
