Miners Rangers maintained their winning record against early season bottom-markers Wath Brow with an ultimately comprehensive win although they had to battle hard against a gutsy Brow side. In a scoreless opening thirty minutes Brow defended heroically whilst 16 year old substitute Dean Rooney, son of coach Ian, gave them an attacking spark. But two Miners tries in the ten minutes before half time broke the back of the Cumbrians’ resistance and although they never threw the towel in Miners were comfortable enough thereafter.
Despite enjoying the bulk of the early territory and possession Miners couldn’t find a way through a resolute Hornets defence which scrambled superbly. By the quarter mark Brow had begun to ask some probing questions in attack and in that context Miners’ opening try came at precisely the right time, Scott O’Brien’s kick fumbled behind the line by the Brow defence and the Miners’ captain following up to touch down, Jimmy Muir goaling. But it was the two tries before the break which set the tone for the second half, first when Adam Thomason put Tommy Parkinson over the line and then when the outstanding Brad Hargreaves finished off a fine passing move to score, Tony Doyle with the extras.
Miners opened the second half determinedly but Brow continued to defend resolutely until a fine Harry Gagen break put the immense Danny Jackson over for his first. Jackson added his second just five minutes later as he stretched over the line before Doyle’s chip was gathered by O’Brien to storm in for his second. However Brow finished strongly with Callum Farrer blasting in and then Rooney taking play to the line and offloaded for Karl Dixon to touch down.
Gamestar – Danny Jackson scored twice whilst his strong runs out wide asked questions of the Brow defence.
