Leigh Miners Ladies 4 – 44 Normanton Knights

The ladies faced Normanton Knights, who played in the Premiership last season and despite being on the wrong end of the score line, they worked tirelessly throughout the game. The ladies had a number of players missing due to injuries or work commitments, but utilised the strong links with Leigh RUFC to ensure they had a 17 player squad.

The ladies started well, matching the visitors set for set in the early stages, but eventually the pressure told. Normanton ran excellent attacking lines throughout the game with the full back and scrum half regularly joining the line from deep, to find gaps in the defensive line. The majority of the oppositions tries came from deep as in general the line speed was good, but the team needs to adapt to the strong attacking lines of their opponents. Miners did not let the visitors have it all their own way, and threatened their line on a number of occasions, being held up over the line, and having the ball stolen in the in-goal area. By half time the visitors had built up a lead of 28-0, and the ladies looked like they may have been on the way to a very heavy defeat when Normanton scored in the first set of the second half, but they dug deep in defence and kept the opposition scoreless for the next 25 minutes, Normanton continued to press, and scored two more long range tries, but despite this the team continued to work hard and were eventually rewarded. Miners were again held up over the line, but a good passing movement allowed Mairead Quinn to force her way over from close range.

Miners player of the match went to Rachael Stott on her 18th birthday, the coaching staff were very pleased with the commitment shown by the team and will look to work on a number of areas in training this week ahead of the short trip to St Patricks next Sunday.

Leigh Miners 8 – Wigan St Patricks 16

The ladies made the short trip to Wigan and once again put in an excellent performance in a closely fought contest. Pat’s started strongly, but the miners defended well to withstand the early pressure. Miners opened the scoring in the twelfth minute, when following good pressure from the forwards, dummy half Rachael Ogden spotted a gap and dived over the line to score. The ladies maintained the pressure with an excellent completion rate, and extended the lead on 25minutes when Rachael Ogden scored again in identical fashion, to stretch the lead to 8-0. Miners pressed for the next score and were denied by an interception when close to the line. The turning point of the game came shortly before halftime, Georgia Sutherland made an excellent break from deep inside her own half, but was hauled down by the Pat’s fullback, the team were unable to capitalise on the break, and were punished when Pats scored a converted try on the brink of half time to make the score 8-6.

Miners continued to work hard in the second half but were hampered by a number of injuries, which reduced the options in rotating the forwards, but prop Nicolette Postlewaite stepped up playing a full 80 minutes and gaining a mention from the opposition coaching staff after the game.   Pats took the lead for the first time on the 50th minute, scoring out wide, making the score 8-10. Both sides pushed for the decisive score, but it took until the 75th minute for Pat’s to seal the game with a converted try.

The ladies player of the match went to Clare Thompson, who will be again representing the GB Teachers in the forthcoming Association Cup.

The ladies next home game will be on Sunday 14th June, when they play the return fixture against St Patricks.
