Miners went down to defeat on the road as Myton picked up their first win of 2013 to climb above the Leigh side in the table. In deceptively-windy conditions on an otherwise mild April afternoon this was a game low on quality, with handling errors and penalties aplenty and the strong gusts also influencing proceedings, but Myton won’t care about the aesthetics of the contest as they secured a welcome victory. Miners meanwhile still search for a first away victory of 2013 and although they led 14-10 early in the second half they succumbed to a Warriors side whose confidence visibly rose as the game went on.

After their rousing showing at Barrow the previous weekend Miners were without influential back row duo Lee Gittins and Ross Bradley whilst Sean Pendlebury was also unavailable. In came Dave Rowlands for his first game of the year with Ryan Monaghan back on the wing. Playing with the wind in the first half Miners sought to capitalise on the advantage the elements gave them but from the early stages handling errors proved contagious on both sides. Already disrupted by the knock-ons and forward passes, the game was further fractured when Myton fullback Chris Wainman went down injured in a tackle as he attempted to break for the line and received lengthy treatment before being helped from the field. Miners almost had a breakthrough as Tom Farrimond snapped up a Myton knock-on and sent Jonny Carroll away but he was wrapped up over the line but just after the twenty minute mark came the opening score, Liam Coleman almost squeezing through before his halfback partner Scott O’Brien showed his trademark nimble footwork to dance past team-mates and opponents alike as he jinked over the line, Jonny Youds converting for the lead.

Myton would have anticipated coming under pressure in the first half given the strength of the wind but in the space of three minutes they found themselves ahead, first when the outstanding Bradley Krebs broke the line on half way and although Youds halted him the bustling second-row had the presence of mind – and the supporting players – to get the pass out for Carl Booth to score. Then the home side were ahead when veteran prop Allan Dunham charged to the line and although he was hauled down he set the position for Ricky Hough to place a kick inside the right channel which deflected off the Miners’ player and into the hands of Richard Dunham to score a try converted by Ashley James and 10-6. Just before the break and Miners were at least on terms through a similar try, Coleman with the kick down the channel and Andrew Groves with the pace to get round his man and score at the corner for 10-10.

As their coach Tony Spence admitted after the game, Myton were surprised to be on terms at the interval given the strength of the wind but within a few minutes of the restart they found themselves behind once again as Miners made a dream start to the second half, the outstanding Youds breaking through the tackle twenty metres out and then stepping inside his opposite number for the try. That proved a false dawn though and Myton struck back immediately, Lee James with a strong kick return setting the position and on the last tackle the easiest of tries, Lee Fewlass at acting half under the posts and using his bulk to bounce off the markers and touch down, Ashley James goaling to restore the Warriors’ advantage. From here Myton grew in confidence and Miners couldn’t handle them. The home side extended their lead with another straightforward score, a scrum inside the Miners’ twenty and the ball moved to the blindside where Lee James had a walk-in to the corner, his brother adding the conversion from the touchline. Ashley James then added a penalty when Miners were found guilty of reefing the ball from the tackle and just after the hour came the killer blow, Myton perhaps fortunate that referee Matthew Kidd missed a knock-on in the build up and capitalising when Krebs slipped the pass for Kris Walker to score and a commanding lead of 30-14.  A further Ashley James penalty kept the scoreboard ticking over before Miners had a late, scant consolation. Monaghan had shown promise with a good break down the left wing moments earlier and the young winger gave the visitors the last word when he finished neatly at the left corner off O’Brien’s pass.
